Bountiful Baskets

Our family has discovered this wonderful thing called Bountiful Baskets. It's a Co-op for produce. I don't know all the ins and outs, but for our part, we order our "basket" on Monday and pick it up on Saturday. There are anywhere from 50+ baskets at any given location. A truck brings the produce to the location where people meet it and unload all the produce. Then, they divide it up among all the baskets. This is done an hour before pick-up time, and then if you ordered a basket, they help you get it and load it into your own containers. All of the unloading and dividing is done by volunteers. Why would people do this? Well, you get about $50 worth of produce for only $15. It doesn't stop there, though. They also offer other products. There is always some type of bread. Other offerings have included a flat of blueberries, a box of cherries, local honey, a mexican pack, an italian pack, granola, cookies, tortillas and other things that I can't think of right now. These all rotate weeks. We are never certain what will come in our basket, but so far most of it has been things we like. We have gotten lettuce and tomatoes ever week, at least one melon every week and bananas most weeks.

So, this is what our $15 basket looked like, minus a few grapes and a couple of pears that we ate as soon as we picked it up. Lettuce, tomatoes celery, broccoli, carrots, bell peppers, grapes, peaches, cantalope, cherries, pears, and bananas.

We also added a "mexcian pack" that had jalapenos, tomatillos, green onions, yellow onions, limes, garlic, green chilis, cilantro, and mexican grey squash. Also, tortillas, 7 dozen for $10. Now I just need a few more tomatoes so that I can make a huge batch of salsa for canning :) In the meantime, fresh salsa sounds soooooo good!
